Medium: ROM 48KB
Hardware requirements: MSX1
With great pleasure we can present to you – the 22nd entry to this ever-going contest! The Goblin is a brisk, fast paced arcade-style platformer running on classic MSX1 systems, which first saw life on the ZX Spectrum.
In the vein of the classic Bubble Bobble, the player is confined to one screen where the action takes place, in which you’ll have to immobilize the enemies first, in order to dispatch of them. Naturally, there are game elements such as a time limit, differentiating enemy movement patterns, and elaborate platforming mechanics in place.
On MSX, games such as Blade Lords by Parallax already varied upon the concept. However, while the inspirations for this funky little game are clear, it is not to be passed off as some stale derivative, let alone a clone. No, ladies and gentlemen, in this game you’ll not be a cute bubble-blowing dragon, nor a cuddly little knight, but rather a tough and grisly goblin who loves beer!
That’s right – instead of blowing bubbles, your adversaries are to be captured by means of your powerful belches, which are your bodily reaction to downing big gulps of beer. These burps will cause tornadoes, which render your enemies powerless. Once you got them caught in such tornado, just push them into a teleport gate and it’s back to demon prison for these no-goods.
This classic MSX1 port of Hicks’s original ZX version, can be played with either keyboard or joystick. The keyboard input settings are redefinable. Enjoy the beer.
