From Tohji Murakata, the creator of the revered MSX2 action RPG Singular Stone, we had the pleasure of receiving another fresh entry to this year’s dev roster – A noodly adventure that will require your best martial arts skills.
For those into old-school gaming, Konami’s short-lived, but quite influential Yie-Ar Kung Fu series may ring a bell. Back in those days, the fine people at Konami had a tendency to give the MSX instalments of their titles some extra love. Yie-Ar Kung Fu was no exception in this, as its MSX exclusive sequel expanded upon the trappings of the original. On top of additional moves of both player and opponents, consumable items were added. Also, with the bouts against a band of varying opponents still forming the meat of the game, these showdowns were now preceded by attack waves of lesser enemies, lifting the concept from isolated arena battles to more of a beat-’em-up feel.
Here’s when we get to the MSXdev entry that we present to you today. Tapping in the vein of the interesting, yet still quite rudimentary gameplay innovations that Yie-Ar Kung Fu 2 had to offer over its predecessors, Maiden’s Extreme Fist – BUN-GA-RUA takes all of that up quite some notches. The player is to navigate several locations, gathering keys and coins to help them in their progress, and to prepare themselves for the inevitable battles that have to be fought out with adversaries.
Moreover – while the heavy references to food products and ancient history have been left intact and expanded upon, the general presentation, however, is quite different. As already showcased by Singular Stone, mister Murakata has a flair for casting the protagonists as powerful women, fighting against the odds. This game offers two playing modes, simple or story mode, supports both English and Japanese, has an SCC based soundtrack, and uses MSX2 screen graphics all kung-fu’ed to have you on the edge of your seat.
Maiden’s Extreme Fist is presented as a 512KB MegaRom, is playable with either keyboard or joystick/pad and includes a Japanese and English manual in PDF format. We hope you will once more have a good time with this latest offering.
